History of Newspaper

The first traces of newspapers are found around the 16th century. In 1566, handwritten newspapers were circulated in Venice, Italy. At that time, the news was written and sent to the news readers every week by twisting the paper into a ball. All the handwritten news used to include Italian and European war and contemporary political news.

After about 50 years, in 1609, the first printed newspaper was published in Germany. This newspaper published in the German language was a weekly paper. The name of that newspaper was Relation. And the first newspaper in English was published in 1620. After that, the first newspapers in France and America were published in 1690 and 1690 respectively.

Then the first newspaper in India was published in 1780. The Bengal Gazette was published under the editorship of James Augustus Hicky. It is believed to be the first newspaper in the Indian subcontinent. The newspaper included four pages.

History of Bangla Newspaper

Samachar Darpan is widely considered the first Bangla newspaper. It was founded in 1818. The weekly was founded by Joshua Marshman and William Ward, and its editor was John Clark Marshman. The price of a copy was four annas. The paper circulated 400 copies in 1836, which was the highest in circulation at the time. The publication continued to be published until 1841.

Modern newspapers first appeared in India four decades before Samachar Darpan. Nonetheless, until 1818, all newspapers published in Kolkata were in English and were edited by Europeans. In 1818, the Srirampur Baptist Mission launched Digdarshan, a Bengali monthly. It is the first newspaper to be published in Bengali. John Clarke Marshman was the editor. Samachar Darpan came out a month earlier than Digdarshan.

The first Bengali-controlled Bengali newspaper was the Bengal Gazette (1818). There was no copy found. As a result, its precise launch date is not certain. Gangakishore Bhattacharya published the Bengal Gazette, which was edited by Harchandra Roy. The newspaper lasted for a year.

Rangpur Bartabaha was East Bengal's first newspaper (1847). Kalicharan Roy Chowdhury was the weekly's founder, and Gurucharan Roy was the editor. Rangpur has the region's oldest printing facility for publishing newspapers. Dhaka Prakash (1861), Dhaka's first Bengali newspaper, was edited by Krishnachandra Majumdar. It survived a hundred years.
